Letter to Shadrach Penn, Jr. Welles supplies Penn information on George D. Prentice's background and reputation in the east. Penn and Prentice were rival newspaper publishers in Louisville. Prentice is referred to as the "biographer" in the letter, which was in regards to his 1830 biography of Henry Clay.

A native of Glastonbury, Conn., Gideon Welles began his career as a lawyer but took up journalism as a profession, founding the Hartford Times, which he also edited, in 1826. Active in the Democratic Party in Connecticut, he served in the Connecticut state legislature and in several state offices.
